The paper will focus on the importance of the need greater for emphasis on Green Engineering in the Caribbean given the challenges most of the countries face with high energy/electricity costs and of course our vulnerability (as island countries) to the adverse effects of global warming and climate change. The paper will include a review of the challenges faced by consultants and architects with implementing Green Engineering such as 1)limited public awareness, 2) lack of sufficient incentives to reduce the costs of necessary equipment and materials, 3) limited local suppliers and after sales services, etc. The paper will highlight the direct benefits of Green Engineering to the customer and of course the benefits to the respective countries and region as a whole. Included will be some practical steps that can be used by engineering consultants, contractors and architects in moving design and construction practices towards making our buildings (new and existing) more “Green”.
